Cozy arrangement between Drug Pushers and Police

This is an all to common case scenario I heard all too many times in Thailand’s Prisons and confirmed as common practice by Thai Police Officers themselves, (the ones now languishing in Thai Prisons themselves that is). It’s quite a cozy arrangement between the pusher and the police. This is how I see it: The police gave the pusher the drugs from their ample store of confiscated narcotics. The Englishman – being from the west made him more likely to be trusted by other Foreigners – then introduced the buyer to the pusher. The pusher then informed the police, and they apprehended the buyer with the drugs in his/her possession, preferably on their way out of the country. The Englishman shared with the pusher their percentage of whatever the buyer had paid for the drugs – which could be anything from $8,000 to $12,000 per kilogram.

Once the case was tried and the buyer convicted, he also took a share of the rewards on offer from the D.E.A. (the drug enforcement agency), of America and the N.S.D. (the narcotics suppression division), of Thailand. If the police could get the suspect to part with some exorbitant amount of money to have the case dropped, then the Englishman and the pusher got some of that, in lieu of the share of the rewards.

The police got the drugs back, plus of course, the lion’s share of the profits and rewards – or, in this case of a pay-off, the purchase price plus the payola – and could use the drugs again for the next sting. In other words, they had a great time making lots of money out of nothing while getting paid by the Government for being on duty at the same time. The police also got all kinds of pats on the back and promotions for doing a great Job, and the N.S.D. office received additional subsidies and financial support from the U.S.A. (America) and other countries to continue the so-called ‘drug offensive’. And very dammed offensive it is too. Now that might not be exactly how it all works, but that’s how I have pieced it all together over the years, and it seems to fit pretty well when all’s considered.
