The Policeman – Turned – Prime Minister

As if good cop-bad cop is not confusing enough.

Now comes life under Thailand’s Prime Minister Toxin-Shinawatra.

Thailand once known as the Land of Smiles has now the atmosphere of a police state. A climate of fear and uncontrolled power of police in Thailand, lack of scrutiny of a justice system, a prison population explosion, not to mention the horrendous amount of 2.500 people shot dead by police under the instructions of The Policeman-Turned-Prime Minister. Horrifying anti-drug campaign of 2003.

A policeman’s job is not an easy one, and it’s definitely not in his job description to act as judge, jury and executioner. Amnesty International and Human Rights Groups around the world have expressed serious concern of a justice system and policemen that has no concern for Human Rights! The fingerprints of a policeman are on the smoking gun of so many of Thailand’s problems right now.

RIOT!!

Sunday morning, September 25th 2005; news is just reaching us via Thai Radio, that numerous rifle shots have been fired into prisoners being held in Lop Buri prison, just north of us here in Bangkwang Nonthaburi prison. It’s unknown how many prisoners have been killed and injured at this stage. I’ve just been told by a prisoner here, that last time a similar incident happened here in Bangkwang the official number of prisoners shot dead here was 28, but in reality it was much higher. As we understand from radio reports still coming in as I write this. Prisoners in Lop Buri prison were protesting or complaining of not having drinking water or shower and toilet water in their cells for the 15 plus hours they are locked in every day, the guards had cut the water supply each day after prisoners were locked up. The final straw came when guards also turned off the TV in a main hall showing Thai Boxing to prisoners and then prison officials announced to TV and Radio media outside the prison. That it had cut the TV in order to stop prisoners gambling. Prisoners asked prison officials to retract such a statement as prisoner’s families and friends would or might stop sending money and food to prisoners if they thought prisoners were gambling with money sent necessary to survive in Thai prison. There was no statement made by prison officials concerning the water supply being cut.

JUVENILLE DETENTION CENTRE RIOT

Conditions in Juvenile detention centers are all so poor, sometimes culminating in riots, hostage taking of prison officials and escape attempts.

On 14th of January 2002 some 250 Juveniles held at Surat Thani Juvenile centre smashed property, set off Molotov cocktails, and burned down one dormitory in protest to harsh conditions.

On January the 17th two National Human Rights Commissioners visited the facility and reported that inmates were hit for no reason with urine-soaked sticks, fed substandard food, and kept in overcrowded conditions.
